Love When It’s Hard

Sometimes relationships are messy and the people that you should be close to feels miles away. Sometimes there are whole catagories of subject matter that are completely off limits for conversation; because they just have too much baggage. Sometimes it’s in your family that there are the minefields where there used to be meadows. Maybe it’s your co-worker or your neighbor, or your former best friend.

And then you need to remember that love isn’t just about words, it’s about doing. And when the air gets thick enough to cut, don’t try cutting it with words. Cut through the mess with love. Do something to show that you care about them. Ask how that meeting at work went or what’s happening on their latest home improvement project. Show up at the next gathering with their favorite treat in hand, or make a phone call to say hello and catch up on the normal chatting.

And remember that now is not forever. Things can get better. Hold the door open with kindness and maybe someday you again will be able to walk through into the sacred spaces in each others’ hearts.

  1. Yes.
What more need I say? Love isn’t a passive thing, it is something we do. And when we live out love, we make the soil ready for healing…in ourselves and in others.
